What is Nordic Walking for Wellness?
Nordic Walking is walking with the addition of specially designed poles in a great whole-body activity that can allow you to remain active while learning to use poles for mobility and balance, increase your walking function and enjoy life unrestricted.
Walking with poles provides you freedom of movement while helping you improve overall strength and help to protect joints. A structured and progressive Nordic Walking for Wellness program can help you maintain mobility while improving walking function, posture and endurance at any walking pace.
Benefits of Nordic Walking
Nordic Walking engages your core muscles and provides for proper posture and balance during walking activities. Walking with poles can increase your walking confidence and strength, allowing you to walk safer and for longer distances at your own speed.
Guided walking sessions include warmup and gentle stretching as well as activities designed to improve your mobility and balance. Participants will progress at their own pace with individualized instruction in a small group setting, enjoying the benefits of interaction with other participants in a supportive setting.
Who can Participate?
This walking program can be safely done by older adults, individuals with limited endurance, or those with mild balance and stability challenges. If you can be on your feet for 10 minutes, you can probably participate safely.
Individuals who are overweight or obese, cancer survivors with peripheral neuropathy, and those rehabilitating from knee surgery, neurological or cardiovascular disorders who have received medical clearance and are encouraged to increase their physical activity can safely take part in walking with poles.
How does it work?
Each session lasts about one hour with rest breaks as needed. Techniques will be progessive, gradually building up walking time from 10 to 30 minutes, or as participant’s ability allows.
